York Welcomes Newest Citizen!

Portland, ME – March 18:  In a ceremony welcoming 35 new American citizens, a York resident’s dream came true.  After 16 years of hard work and study,  surrounded by friends, Nanci Arruda became a United States citizen.

Nanci’s family had lost their business and home in the Brazilian economic crisis of the late 1990s.  At the age of 53, she decided to start over in America.  On March 20, 2000, Nanci arrived in the US.  “In three days, I was already working the late night shift at a factory in Lowell, MA,” Nanci stated proudly.   Nanci has worked hard to provide for herself here in the US and to send money to her struggling family in Brazil.

In 2003, Nanci moved to York, Maine.  With very little English language skills, Nanci continued working, now two jobs, but recognized she needed to study English and wanted to become a citizen.  Nanci studied at York Adult Education, off and on since 2007, learning English and practicing for the citizenship test.  This past August, Nanci applied for citizenship.  Working one-on-one with a tutor at York Adult Education, Nanci was confident going into the test and interview.  “I am so thankful for Lisa and Marie who helped me with the big application form and studying to pass the test.  My family in Brazil is so proud of me,” said Nanci with a big smile, beaming with pride.  And York’s newest citizen has everything to be proud of.  Congratulations, Nanci!
